Major Similarities and Diffrences of DSS and BI

Decision support system is the main thing of the decision making. BI in the other hand is where DSS grows to become. Back to DSS, it is actually a tool to help you decide things. We take the simple example, in day to day life we need to make decision. Whether it is to choose what to eat, what to wear and anything else.

On the industries manager or the company decision maker needs to make big decision on their business whether to increase production or to halt on order. Their decision, unlike ours is really crucial because every decision is critical to their future business.

Back in the daily life, business will decide on things by checking every records on paper manually. As time goes, companies need faster decision with larger data source, that is why we need a decision support system.

Because businesses need a DSS there is something that is called BI or business intelligence. BI will show stuff business need to make every decision in day to day basis. BI usually is in a dashboard form, they tell when and what to do. But all of the things that BI and DSS tell or help the company, the last one to make the decision is the people. DSS and BI is only a tool but they will give you more option and consideration to make a great company future.

  1. Thank you, eventhough you don't need to be dogmatic as i always said yet I give points from reference book for additional input:

    • BI uses a data warehouse, whereas DSS can use any data source (including a data warehouse).

    • Most DSS are built to support decision making directly, whereas most BI systems are built to provide information that it is believed will lead to improved decision making.

    • BI has a strategy/executive orientation whereas DSS are usually oriented toward analysts.

    • BI systems tend to be developed with commercially available tools, whereas DSS tend to use more custom programming to deal with problems that may be unstructured.

    • DSS methodologies and tools originated largely in academia, whereas BI arose largely from the software industry. Many BI tools, such as data mining and predictive analysis, have come to be considered DSS tools as well.
