Real-Time Data Warehouse

1. RDW(Real-time Data Warehouse)Definition
A Real-time data warehouse is a process of decision support that is up to date and ongoing when all business transactions occur. Real-time data warehouse is usually also called as active data warehouse.

2. Benefits of using a real-time data warehouse

  • RDW is making a better quality from the traditional data warehouse
  • Propagate decision making process until a tactical level and maybe going to the operational level.
  • Users can interact with customers and suppliers directly

3. The major differences between traditional (TDW) and real-time data warehouse (RDW)

  • TDW decision making is just until strategic level sometimes tactical level but RDW is until the tactical level and sometimes extended to operational level.
  • TDW result is a little bit hard to be measured but RDW can be measured until operational data.
  • TDW coversion is measured by days to a month but RDW is just in minutes.
  • TDW data summary content is just the core of the data but RDW includes details of data
  • TDW can be used for a small company to a medium company but RDW is for a big company that needs details of data
  • A report of TDW is limited so it is just for measuring and checking data but RDW report is flexible
  • TDW is usually for upper levels of a company and people that need data storage and have knowledge of data warehouse like managers and business analysts but  RDW is for operational staff and call centers
4. The drivers for RDW :

  • Companies are not patient to wait for days of operational data to be loaded to datawarehouse and to be analyzed
  • Because they (companies) need an incremental condition that always change just in minutes
  • Because of the lack of sycronize it to meta data and it too expensiveto develop, maintain, and keep the security different than RDW that the data get centralized so it get analyze in many kind of BI/BA tools
  • Loading process based on batch system every night needs ETL setup and big power and that makes the process really need time so they make an EAI (Enterprise Application Integration) process with a real-time process that can remove or decrease the batch process
